Rickie Lambert raved about Southampton ace James Ward-Prowse, when speaking exclusively to the Daily Echo, suggesting that the 24-year-old is one of the best strikers of the ball that he has ever come across.

Big words indeed for someone who has played with the likes of Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho.

Ward-Prowse has been in fine form for the Saints this season, especially since Ralph Hasenhüttl took over at St Mary’s at the start of December, but he has still only managed to chalk up three goals, and zero assists, in 17 appearances in all competitions.

The 24-year-old seems to have been given more of a license to get forward under the Austrian, and if he continues to improve, more goals and assists will surely follow.

And Lambert, who spent five years with Southampton, made a bold claim about the talented midfield ace, when speaking exclusively to the Daily Echo:

Rickie Lambert of Southampton shoots on goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Southampton and Manchester United at St Mary's Stadium on May 11, 2014 in Southampton, England.

“Prowsey is one of the best, if not the best, set-piece takers and strikers of a ball I’ve come across. It’s great to see he’s had a new lease of life and been given a green light to get forward. I’ve always said he should be scoring free-kicks to get his confidence and it’s brilliant to see he’s hitting the back of the net now. With his technique he should be scoring at least five to ten goals a season.”

Southampton are currently in a whole world of trouble, and they sit precariously inside the bottom three.

If they Saints are to excavate themselves from the drop zone, Ward-Prowse will have to start chipping in with goals and assists on a regular basis, and judging by Lambert’s comments, he is more than capable of doing just that.
