Reported Arsenal target Andre Onana is ‘one of the best goalkeepers in the world’ and is more than ready for a big-money move away from Eredivisie champions Ajax, former Cameroon teammate Eyong Enoh told Ajax Showtime.

It’s that time again.

The summer transfer market is about to begin and not even a lengthy doping ban has taken Onana out of the limelight.

Goal reports that, despite the fact that he may be unavailable until February 2022 (pending an appeal on a sentence handed down by UEFA), the 25-year-old shot-stopper is still a man in high demand.

Arsenal want a new goalkeeper to compete with the always-erratic Bernd Leno and Onana could be available for as little as £7 million with his contract expiring next year.

While Enoh is keen to see his compatriot stay at Ajax, he is confident that Onana is more than ready to make the step up to a club of Arsenal’s size and stature.

“I love Ajax and I love to see Andre in the Ajax shirt. As far as I am concerned, he will stay longer in Amsterdam, but I will not advise him on that,” said Enoh, who won two Eredivisie titles in Amsterdam a decade ago.

“He has shown for several seasons that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he would be a reinforcement for many clubs in Europe. His long suspension does not change that.”

Enoh remains confident that Onana will also have his 12-month ban either reduced or rescinded, with an appeal to be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July.

“I know Andre as a person and as a professional, I trust him. UEFA believes him, so I don’t see any reason not to take Andre’s story for truth,” Enoh added.

“He is a very good and intelligent player who has been doing very well at Ajax for years. He would never want to waste that by to use doping intentionally.”

Goal adds that Arsenal made their interest in Onana known in January but signed boyhood Gunners fanatic Mat Ryan on loan from Brighton instead, after a hefty price-tag forced them to consider more affordable alternatives.
