Thierry Henry has claimed that Giorgos Giakoumakis scored ‘one of his luckiest’ goals during Celtic’s 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The legendary striker did add that it was a ‘great’ finish from the Celtic 27-year-old, as former Manchester United goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel praised Shakhtar for ‘turning the game’ with a brilliant goal from rising star, Mykhaylo Mudryk, as they told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (25/10/22 at 10:20 pm).

Celtic already knew that they were out of the race to reach the knockout stages, but they still had a chance to secure Europa League football.

A win was needed against Shakhtar, and even though Ange Postecoglou’s side took the lead, they were haunted by one of Europe’s brightest talents again in Mudryk.

It was Greg Taylor’s run and cross from the left channel that was put into the danger area, and following a deflection, it fell straight into Giakoumakis’ path and he fired the ball into the bottom corner from point-blank range.

But that’s when Mudryk worked his magic, as both Henry and Schmeichel shared their thoughts on yesterday’s result.

“It has to be one of his luckiest goals, but what a great finish from Giakoumakis,’ said Henry.

Peter Schmeichel added: “At this time, it was all Celtic and I was a little worried for Shakhtar, they didn’t look like a strong opposition at this point, but they bounced back and scored.

“They started to play well and create chances. This is how they played against Real Madrid. Turn the game quickly and it was a fantastic goal from Mudryk.”

LESSONS NEED TO BE LEARNED

One more Champions League game remains for Celtic and it’s a trip to Spain to take on the current European champions Real Madrid in their backyard.

Even though the Bhoys are out of this, it will be a special occasion for everyone associated with the club and it’s a great chance, with the pressure off, to create history and a possible shock.

Celtic need to learn their lessons from this European adventure because the performances were there, especially at home, they just went ruthless enough in front of the goal.

In many of the games, including against Real Madrid themselves, they started off in such a high-tempo, aggressive and all-action manner, but they just couldn’t find that goal, which in the end, cost them.
