There isn’t much to shout about for Aston Villa, but one positive light coming from yet another abject display and 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest was a certain Ashley Young.
The 37-year-old has perhaps been Villa’s best player this season, and on Monday night, he scored his first goal of the season to rescue Steven Gerrard from an embarrassing defeat against a team that was sitting bottom of the Premier League table before kick-off and had lost five games in a row.
Young joked on Instagram ‘it only took 11 years’ to get back on the scoresheet for Villa, as he expressed his disappointment at his team only managing to pick up a point.
In the comments section, the former Manchester United player was praised by some of his former teammates, including retired left-back, Patrice Evra who joked: “One night with me and boom.”
Kortney Hause, who is now in the colours of Watford, described Young’s goal as ‘brazy’, whilst he was also praised by former Manchester United academy product, Angel Gomes.
YOUNG HAS BEEN VILLA’S BEST PLAYER THIS SEASON
It’s a credit to Young that he is still pulling off such great performances and an embarrassment to the club that they are relying so much on a 37-year-old.
Ever since Young took to the field against Manchester City, he has looked every inch of the player that used to cause havoc during his early days.
Playing with more maturity, controlling the game from deep, making the right decisions, and being brave in possession, it has been a strong few weeks in the colours of Claret & Blue for the versatile player.
In truth, when Lucas Digne returns from action, Young deserves to keep his place in the XI because there aren’t many shouting from the rooftops that they deserve to be starting.
Perhaps playing further forward can help this energy-sapped and struggling Villa team from scoring more goals because, at this rate, in-form Chelsea are going to demolish the Midlands side on Sunday.
