Should Leeds United promote Oliver Sarkic to the first team?

A general view of Elland Road Stadium prior to the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion at Elland Road on October 17, 2015 in Leeds, England.

One deadline day move which went largely under the radar was Leeds United’s signing of Benfica starlet Oliver Sarkic.

Sarkic signed on loan for Leeds on a short-term deal, which the club website announced will expire on December 31.

Current plans for Sarkic are unclear, but he has shown enough so far to suggest that the Whites should take a closer look at him over this final month.

Sarkic has performed well for the under-23 side in recent weeks, scoring four goals over the past month, against Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City.

He could not have done more so far, and Leeds should promote him to the first team to see if he can make an impact, with their own strikers not exactly hitting it out of the park.

Lasogga has been missing the past few weeks, while Caleb Ekuban is looking very promising but yet to score a league goal.

Leeds United's Dutch midfielder Jay-Roy Grot (2nd R) has this shot saved as Leicester City's English defender Harry Maguire (R) closes in during the English League Cup fourth round...

Jay-Roy Grot is an every week substitute, but has shown very little and in recent games has been reduced to playing just five or so minutes of action – where nobody is benefitting.

Grot could really do with a spell in the under-23s, and Sarkic should take his place.

If Leeds are going to consider buying the Montenegro youth international from Benfica, he must give them extra reason to pay up, and a first team goal could be all the encouragement they need.
