Ex-Sunderland striker Martyn Waghorn enjoyed a superb showing against his former club on Tuesday night.

Sunderland’s woeful form continued on Tuesday night, with Simon Grayson’s men losing 5-2 away at Ipswich Town in a thumping defeat.
The Black Cats desperately needed a result after losing 2-1 at home to Cardiff City over the weekend, but things actually got worse for Grayson at Portman Road.
Martyn Waghorn put Ipswich in front before Billy Jones equalised, only for Jordan Spence, Bersant Celina and David McGoldrick to put Ipswich into a 4-1 lead.
Aiden McGeady’s goal back for Sunderland was quickly cancelled out by Grant Ward’s goal, meaning Ipswich claimed a 5-2 win, heaping the pressure on Sunderland manager Grayson.
The thumping defeat was made all the more galling by the fact that forward Waghorn enjoyed a superb evening, and he not only used to play for Sunderland, but was targeted for a return over the summer.
The Daily Mail reported in July that Grayson wanted to bring Waghorn back to the Stadium of Light, but he joined Ipswich just a week later, with Sunderland going with summer signings James Vaughan and Lewis Grabban.
Waghorn, 27, enjoyed a stunning performance against Sunderland, chipping in one goal and two assists – more than Vaughan has managed in either category all season, with Grayson potentially thinking he should have signed Waghorn instead of one of the two strikers he brought in.
The forward proved just what an impact he could have had with Sunderland, having taken his season’s tally to five goals and two assists, at a similar fee to Vaughan – and Grayson may well be wishing he had Waghorn on his side rather than against him on Tuesday night.
