Leeds United must push ahead and try to sign Robert Huth.
Leeds United have enjoyed a superb start to the season and sit top of the Championship after five undefeated matches.
Yet there is still a sense that the Whites have not done as much as they can do to address their limited defensive options.
One way they can change that is by signing a free agent, and target Robert Huth.
Huth was a key part of Leicester City’s Premier League title winning side in 2015/16 and was released by the Foxes in the summer.
The former Chelsea and Stoke City defender has the experience this Leeds team lacks, and even at 34-years-old he could be a big asset to a promotion chasing side.
Huth is a physical defender with the attributes to deal with any challenge the Championship can throw at him in a one off game.
The German playing alongside Pontus Jansson could form a fearsome partnership and be an upgrade on club captain Liam Cooper at the back.
Signing Huth would address the concerns around this Leeds side and transform them into near certainties for promotion, rather than just being seen as one of many challengers at this point.
Issues to be addressed are whether Huth could fit into Leeds’ pay structure, and whether he is a player who is willing to buy into Marcelo Bielsa’s training methods at this late age of his career.
The Argentine has rarely sought to sign players over 30 at his previous clubs and has not done so this summer.
So it would be both a surprise, and a serious show of intent if Leeds push to sign Huth on a short term deal, but it’s also hard to argue that it is not a move which would make the Whites even stronger.
