The Dutch international is just 32-years-old.
Benfica’s Francisco Fernandez Javi Garcia (R) and PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal in action
Back in June 2012 Swansea City were being heavily linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal.
The Daily Mail reported that Swansea were considering the Dutchman as a potential replacement for Gylfi Sigurdsson, who eventually joined Tottenham Hotspur that summer.
Swansea’s interest was justified. Bakkal was a talented player who had impressed at PSV for several seasons. He even won a solitary cap for the Netherlands in 2009.
But less than five years on from Swansea’s heavy interest and Bakkal, aged just 32, has retired from the game.
Eindhoven Dagblad spoke to the player, perhaps famous for being the first player bitten by Luis Suarez, this week and he confirmed he had quit on the game, saying he no longer felt the need to play. He had recently trained with PSV and had a trial at Sparta Prague but decided his time in the game was up.
Otman Bakkal
His career went on the skids after a move to Dynamo Moscow instead of Swansea. His last game came in February 2014, featuring for Feyenoord in a 2-2 draw with FC Twente.
Hopefully he can find success and peace in his post-football career.
