Should Leeds consider Rangers Jak Alnwick as a back up to Bailey Peacock-Farrell?

The emergence of Bailey Peacock-Farrell as a first team regular at Leeds United in recent weeks has given the club a dilemma this summer.

Prior to that Leeds fans were clamouring for an experienced goalkeeper to be signed this summer, similar to Robert Green in 2016 before he was disastrously replaced last summer by Felix Wiedwald.

An experienced goalkeeper would shunt Peacock-Farrell back to being an understudy, so Leeds might have to consider finding a middle ground, a player with experience and potential who would simply have to compete with Peacock-Farrell and potentially be a back-up.

Step forward Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers saves from Conor Sammon of Partick Thistle during the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Alnwick won plaudits for Rangers at the weekend despite their 5-0 loss to Celtic, making seven saves and preventing the hapless Gers from even greater embarrassment.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reported Alnwick was on trial at Leeds in 2015 after his Newcastle United release and did not earn a contract, going on to sign with Port Vale where his performances prompted Rangers to buy him.

Despite impressing and starting recently, Alnwick’s future at Rangers appears numbered.

The Gers are set to sign Hull City’s Allan McGregor to be their number one next season while current first choice Wes Foderingham, who has been injured, says he is staying to fight for his place, the Scottish Sun reports.

This leaves Alnwick as the odd man out, and he may fancy his chances of first team football to be better elsewhere.

At Leeds he would ‘just’ have to battle Peacock-Farrell next season, and for the young Whites stopper, this would be welcome competition yet still allow him a fair chance to claim the number one spot as his own.

While Alnwick has played in the Premier League for Newcastle and Scottish Premiership for Rangers, he is still improving. If Peacock-Farrell fights him off to be first choice so be it, he will have earned it.
