On the 16th August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Let’s cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 16th August 2014, but a year earlier.
What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here are some of the big scoops from the 16th August 2013…
Red Devil Ozil
On this day 12 months ago Manchester United were reportedly offered Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil – who the Spanish side were believed to be keen on selling.
The German international was apparently offered to David Moyes and co for a fee in the region of £40 million.
Real needed to sell a player in order to fund their world record attempt to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur – and Carlo Ancelotti was not believed to be a big fan of the German.
United did apparently make a late move for the player in the Transfer Window but it was too late as Arsenal had beaten them to the punch – agreeing a £42.4 million deal on deadline day.
No, Cissokho!
On a day when Luis Suarez was apologising to his Liverpool team-mates Liverpool reportedly made moves to bring in a left-back – as it was reported a move for Aly Cissokho was as good as done.
The club were chasing a season-long loan deal for the player after missing out on Guilherme Siqueira and Lorenzo Melgarejo and eventually did tie it up four days later.
A year to the day since and Liverpool have signed another left-back, Alberto Moreno, who fans will hope has a better campaign then Cissokho did in 2013-14.
Mourinho refuses to quit
Jose Mourinho is a lot of things, but one thing he is not, is a quitter as he continued to pursue Wayne Rooney despite Manchester United insisting he was not for sale on a regular basis.
He maintained his wish to sign the reportedly unsettled player a year ago today:
Rooney is of course now Manchester United captain – so his departure a year on would be very unlikely.
