On the 5th July 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
Let’s cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 5th July 2014, but a year earlier.
What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here are some of the big scoops from the 5th July 2013…
Coquelin story
Arsenal sent French midfielder Francis Coquelin out on loan to German outfit SC Freiburg. The young and talented utility man had been used sparingly at Arsenal in the past – and was often played in a variety of different positions.
But he was sent to Germany for first-team football. However his spell was a mixed bag. He played plenty of football but most of it out of position on the left wing.
He had his number 22 shirt stripped from him upon the signing of the loan deal, it went to Yaya Sanogo on the same day, and it does not look like he will get it back. A summer transfer beckons.
Henrikh off the table
Liverpool missed out on one of their big transfer targets of last summer as Armenian talent Henrikh Mkhitaryan joined Borussia Dortmund a year ago today for a fee of £23.6 million.
The Shakhtar Donetsk man was intent on leaving the Ukrainian side but despite the lure of Anfield he decided to join the German side as they could offer Champions League football.
It was not the only big name Liverpool missed out on last summer. They also failed in a bid to sign Diego Costa – who will join Chelsea for £32 million this summer.
Paulinho signed
Three days after agreeing a fee with Corinthians it was confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur had signed Paulinho from the Brazilian club.
The Brazilian international cost them £17 million and they fought off late interest from Inter Milan and Real Madrid to snap up the box-to-box midfielder.
It was certainly a deal that got fans excited – however he had a rather underwhelming first campaign in North London.
