The now Middlesbrough striker was wanted by Spurs this time last year.

A year ago, today and Tottenham Hotspur found themselves linked with a move for Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo as they looked for striking alternatives.

It came as Spurs began to come to terms with the idea that Saido Berahino may not be heading to the club from West Bromwich Albion despite their strong interest in concluding such a deal.

It was therefore reported by the Daily Mail that Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino had put together a list of back-up options – with the Spaniard top of it.

Of course, Negredo did not go on to sign for Spurs. They did not bring another striker at all and went on to come up short in their pursuit of the eventual champions Leicester City.

Negredo went on to score nine goals after the links but struggled for his best form at Velcnia and this summer he was loaned out to Middlesbrough.

He has had some success with Boro and in his most recent performance he put in a magnificent display that truly showcased his class.

Spurs fans might just wonder if Negredo might have been a better option than Vincent Janssen in the summer.
