One year down the line and the Belgian is set to leave after failing to negotiate a new deal
Newport County’s Irish striker Padraig Amond (L) vies with Tottenham Hotspur’s Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld
Tottenham Hotspur are currently looking like losing Toby Alderweireld in the summer. The Belgian defender has battled with injury trouble in the past 18 months and has failed to negotiate a new deal at the club.
He is said to be wanting higher wages than the club is offering but with that not looking likely the reports are currently suggesting he could be sold – with the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and even Arsenal being mentioned as possible destinations.
But if you rewind just twelve months it looked as though this would never be a scenario for Tottenham.
Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur
A year ago to the day the Daily Mail were reporting that Alderweireld was close to agreeing a new deal at the club.
They suggested that a new five-year agreement was ‘close to being agreed’ and that the Spurs star would be on a salary of £75k-a-week.
Spurs wanted to remove a 2019 release clause from his deal, worth around £25 million.
But it is that sort of wage that appears to be the sticking point. The Times recently reported that Alderweireld wants £150,000 per week and is frustrated when comparing his current £50,000 a week contract to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, who earns £180,000 per week.
Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur reacts
Last year the idea of losing Alderweireld seemed an impossibility for Spurs. He was widely considered the best defender in the Premier League and Tottenham struggled without him.
But the arrival of Davinson Sanchez has been very positive whilst the Belgian’s injury troubles have certainly diminished his value and Spurs are now more than open to the possibility of selling the defender.
What a difference a year makes.
