On the 8th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United
I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 8th January 2014, but a year earlier.
What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here are some of the big scoops from the 8th January 2013…
Walcott ready to ‘Sign Da Ting’
It was reported in the Daily Mail that Arsenal had finally had a breakthrough with Theo Walcott regarding a new contract at the club.
The England international had been involved in a long-winded and often difficult contract wrangle with the club – with a pay-rise and assurances over his playing position in the spotlight.
However, The Mail were fastest out the traps with this report – and he signed a £100k-a-week deal to remain an Arsenal player ten days later on the 18th.
Made In Chelsea
Chelsea it seemed had decided to allow Frank Lampard to leave the club – even if the England international didn’t want to go.
His contract was due to expire at the end of the season – and it had become clear that the club were not willing to offer the veteran a new deal.
Rafa Benitez, then interim boss at Stamford Bridge stated…
“Everyone knows the legends have been here and what they have achieved, but we have to see new players coming in. It’s part of life”… which only stoked the flames.
But Lamps was one of the clubs best player last term – and was rewarded with a new deal in May.
Daniel puts the boot in
The striker, who had only recently joined Liverpool from Chelsea for £12 million, had this to say ahead of a meeting with Manchester United:
“It is the biggest club I have ever played for. In the Premier League, there is no bigger club than Liverpool.”
Sturridge scored in the game – but goals from Robin Van Persie and Nemanja Vidic were enough for a United win.
