On the 1st September 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 1st September 2013, but a year earlier – which just happened to be the day after the transfer window shut at the start of last season.
What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here is a select pick of big scoops from the 1st September 2012 …
No bounty on Moutinho
One of the transfer deals that really went to the wire was Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Portuguese international Joao Moutinho.
In a deal that would broke the clubs transfer record (something Spurs fans have grown used to THIS summer) Spurs reportedly had a bid of £24 million agreed for the talented midfield maestro.
But in the end the deal did not happen. Late snags involving the ownership of his player rights and the wages being offered stopped a deal going ahead, and considering the lateness of the approach there was no time to iron out the details.
AVB said of the deal:
“We agreed the player terms late but there were situations regarding the contract that were not right so we didn’t complete the transfer but we have cover enough and Moutinho’s transfer not happening should not overshadow that we got one of the biggest coups of the transfer market with Dempsey.’’
Dempsey is now playing at Seattle Sounders while Moutinho signed for AS Monaco this summer.
Falc-now Chelsea want him
Falcao scored a first-half hat-trick in the Super Cup on deadline day that reportedly had Roman Abramovich licking his lips.
But like Moutinho, it never happened, and he now plays for Monaco.
