The striker has not been as lethal in front of goal since leaving Grimsby Town for Wigan Athletic.
A year ago today saw Grimsby Town’s majority shareholder John Fenty inform the Grimsby Telegraph that Leeds United could have beaten Wigan to Omar Bogle’s signature on deadline day, but chose not to.
With 19 goals in 30 games in League Two that season, Bogle was on the radar of several top clubs:
“There was another club, which I now don’t mind revealing as Leeds United, who were tracking the interest in Omar and they had an opportunity, at the last minute on deadline day, to come in and pip what was being offered by Wigan.”
Bogle eventually joined Wigan on a two-and-a-half-year deal, with the Daily Mail reporting that the fee involved was somewhere between £1million and £1.5million.
So did Leeds miss out?
In the 12 months since, Bogle has been busy. He scored twice in 14 games for Wigan, not enough to help them survive relegation to League One, before leaving the club – his final game being against Leeds.
He joined Cardiff City in the summer but despite a spurt of three goals in three games at one point in his Bluebirds career, he has not reached the heights Neil Warnock would like. With Cardiff challenging for promotion Bogle has been sidelined slightly and in January was sent out on loan to League One side Peterborough United.
Since Leeds seemingly passed up the opportunity to sign the talented frontman he has scored just five goals in 27 games and been at three different clubs.
At 24-years-old he may still go on to be a top Championship striker. However, for now Leeds fans will rest easy in the knowledge that Bogle has not been a glaring transfer blunder.
