Four years ago today, Leeds made a very low key appointment.

Last week Leeds United captured the imagination of the football world by appointing globally respected manager Marcelo Bielsa.
It truly is a magnificent coup, attracting a manager fawned over by the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino.
Four years ago today, the Leeds made a very different appointment.

On June 19 2014, Leeds took the staggeringly bizarre decision to hire unknown boss Dave Hockaday.
It was a decision straight from the Massimo Cellino playbook, the madcap Italian owner who had bought Leeds a few months earlier, and sacked Brian McDermott twice.
The only predictable aspect of Hockaday’s appointment was the outcome, with Cellino sacking him after just four games and one victory.

Leeds have since waved goodbye to Massimo Cellino and hello to slick new owner Andrea Radrizzani, but the new owner’s first season actually saw the Whites go backwards.
So his move to hire Marcelo Bielsa shows how ambitious Leeds are being right now.
It may not be a success, but there is not a single Leeds fan who would trade 2018 for 2014.
