Liverpool are one of the most dominant sides in Europe today. The Reds won the Champions League last year and followed that up by winning their first league title in three decades last season.

Jurgen Klopp has truly transformed this Liverpool side, but the Reds were not the same before he took charge in 2015.

Brendan Rodgers had a phenomenal season seven years ago when Liverpool almost won the Premier League. They finished two points short in the end, and lost star striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona that summer.

That was a massive blow for Liverpool. The Uruguayan’s departure hit Liverpool hard, and the 2014/15 season was a very difficult one for Reds supporters, who watched their side finish sixth in the Premier League; 25 points behind champions Chelsea.

Liverpool’s bizarre XI against Real Madrid

On this day six years ago, Liverpool flew to the Spanish capital to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League. The Reds had won just one of their first three group games before the clash at the Bernabeu, and they needed a win. But Rodgers named a pretty bizarre starting XI.

Skipper Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli were all left on the bench.

Liverpool fans feared the worst before kickoff. But, surprisingly, Real Madrid only won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Karim Benzema in the 27th minute.

Rodgers rested all of his key players for the game in Madrid as Liverpool faced Chelsea just a few days after their Champions League clash. Sadly for him, his move backfired and the Reds lost 2-1 to Jose Mourinho’s side at Anfield.

Liverpool fans will look back at this period with a smile on their face. The days of starting Fabio Borini up front are long gone. The Reds are a different animal now.

Klopp has changed the face of the club and, if things go his way, Liverpool will remain the kings of the Premier League at the end of this season as well.
