The French international slammed his team-mates for a poor season at White Hart Lane.

A year ago, on the 23rd April 2014, there was plenty going on in the world of football.

Liverpool revealed plans for their Anfield expansion project, David Moyes broke his silence after being sacked by Manchester United and Arsenal were first linked with a move for Southampton’s Calum Chambers – who they did indeed go on to sign that summer.

But for the latest in a set of features looking back on this day in football a year previously the focus is on Tottenham Hotspur.

Lloris loses his cool

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made the news a year ago today after slamming his team-mates recent performances.

The London Evening Standard reported him as stating:

“I think all the players in the squad have the ambition to play in the Champions League. It is the ambition of the club as well.

“We conceded a lot of goals after individual mistakes and you know when you play against top teams it is too difficult to come back in the game.

“I hope so [to do better next season]. It will be difficult to do worse, especially against the top four or five teams.

“I mean, we conceded a lot of bad defeats. This season we had sometimes the feeling that we gave up. We can’t allow this kind of behaviour. We have to show more character.”

It was a scathing assessment of the season which saw Spurs fall short of Champions League qualification. However, a year on, not much has improved. He said that it would be harder to do worse, yet they have. Spurs are currently sixth in the table and are well off of fourth. Currently, they are seven points behind Manchester City with five games remaining.

The club have once again missed out on the Champions League and that could mean curtains for Lloris’ Tottenham career.

The Frenchman was recently linked with a move away from the club by The Guardian as he wants to play Champions League football.

Judging by his comments from a year ago, it is safe to assume he may very well be on his way.
