The Italian legend was rumoured to be in line for the managerial hot-seat at Elland Road.

In the summer Leeds United decided to bring Garry Monk as their new manager. The former Swansea boss replaced Steve Evans at Elland Road. However, it could have been a far more extravagant appointment.

On this day a year ago the Daily Mail reported how Italian World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro was being targeted as the potential new manager at Leeds.

It was the idea of Italian owner Massimo Cellino, whose popularity at Leeds was at perhaps an all-time low 12 months ago.

The report claimed that Cannavaro had already visited Leeds for talks.

It was a story that excited some Leeds fans, because of the massive name being linked with the role. Others however were rightly tentative. Cannavaro’s managerial career was not impressive, with spells in China and the Middle East.

In the end, nothing came of the Cannavaro links.

Leeds instead appointed Monk and it was good they did. He has guided Leeds to a brilliant season and they are now battling for promotion back to the Premier League.

Cannavaro? He is back in China, managing the likes of Axel Witsel and Alexandre Pato at Tianjin Quanjian.
