On the 8th July 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester United.
Let’s cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 8th July 2014, but a year earlier.
What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?
Here are some of the big scoops from the 8th July 2013…
Kone signs for Everton
A year ago today and Everton had completed the signing of 29-year-old Ivorian striker Arouna Kone after meeting his £6 million release fee. Kone had played under new Everton boss Roberto Martinez at Wigan Athletic but despite an excellent season at The DW Stadium he failed to help them stave off relegation from the Premier League.
Newcastle has also met the fee but he chose to join his former manager at Goodison Park.
But it has been a poor debut season for the player. He injured knee cartilage in October and was out for the rest of the season – still waiting for his first goal for the club.
Strootman on future
Dutch midfielder Kevin Strootman was discussing his future at PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch international was being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United – as David Moyes looked to try and increase his midfield options.
But Strootman did not hint at a move to United:
“There are several clubs interested, but only when they reach an agreement with PSV do I come into the picture. This not to say that any are in the world’s top six…Whether the club I leave for must play in the Champions League? That wasn’t the case when I moved to PSV.”
PSV were certain that he was going nowhere, but in the end he did – joining AS Roma.
He had a great season which ended with a nasty knee injury toward the end of the campaign. Now it is rumoured that Louis van Gaal wants him in January, a player he used often in The Netherlands.
Suarez bid rejected
Liverpool rejected a £30 million bid from Arsenal for Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan wanted a move to a Champions League team last summer and Arsenal opened the bidding for the player.
Of course it became a massive transfer saga – with Suarez staying at Liverpool and winning PFA Player of the Year.
He is now set to join Barcelona in the coming weeks.
