The Dutchman failed to have a lasting impact with the Bhoys.
Derk Boerrigter – Celtic and Ignazio Abate – AC Milan
One year ago today Celtic decided to release one of their players from his contract at the club. The departure was not mourned by Bhoys fans.
The player in question was Derk Boerrigter.
Celtic paid a reported £3 million fee to sign the winger from Ajax back in 2013, according to ESPN.
It seemed a good deal considering the player’s illustrious past. He had been in the Dutch national squad in 2011 and he had been a star for Ajax in 2011-12, scoring 10 goals in 23 appearances.
But his time at Celtic was less impressive. He suffered a series of injury problems. His last appearance for Celtic came in the Champions League defeat against NK Maribor in August 2014.
Since then he struggled with knee trouble and played just 25 games for Celtic in nearly three seasons, scoring one goal.
At the time of his release his agent Soren Lerby told the Scottish Sun that the Celtic flop was fully fit and training hard ahead of his next career move – with the USA looking enticing.
Celtic’s Derk Boerrigter is fouled by St Johnstone’s David Mackay for a penalty and is later sent off
That never happened. A year down the line and the Dutchman has ghosted off the face of the football planet.
He was linked with a move to Roda JC in October 2016 and Boerrigter is still represented by Essel Sports Management and Lerby but he has not been with a professional club since his Celtic release.
But the winger is still only 30-years-old and hopefully he can find himself a next step in his career in the not so distant future.
