Wojciech Szczesny tried to convince Robert Lewandowski to join Arsenal.
On this day a year ago there were plenty of big stories doing the rounds. The Sun reported that Chelsea wanted Diego Costa in the summer, which proved correct. Darren Fletcher told The Mirror about his battle with ulcerative colitis. A year down the line and he has just joined West Brom.
But the star story of the day was The Guardian’s report on how Wojciech Szczesny tried to convince Robert Lewandowski to sign for the club in the summer of 2014.
The Polish star was of course an international team-mates of the Arsenal goalkeeper and had been banging in the goals for Borussia Dortmund.
His contract was due to expire in the summer of 2014 and that saw a litany of clubs chasing his signature.
“I can confirm that Wojciech Szczesny tried to convince me to join Arsenal.
“We had several talks about this. It was him who did most of the talking, how the club looks inside, what Arsène Wenger thinks of me.
“When we trained before the Champions League games at Colney, there were important people from Arsenal at our sessions as well.”
However the striker never made his way to Arsenal. Instead he joined Dortmund’s bitter Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich instead.
Since making the move to the Allianz Arena Lewandowski has scored ten goals in 26 games for the club, but Arsenal have made up for it with the signature of Alexis Sanchez.
