This past week saw Leeds United win a fourth round tie in the League Cup for the first time since 2012 as they beat Norwich City on penalties to set up a quarter-final clash with Liverpool.

The last time the Whites enjoyed a victory at the same stage of the competition came on this day four years ago when Premier League side Southampton travelled to Elland Road.

While the Saints’ team selection confirmed that they had other priorities – Nigel Adkins’ men had won just once in the top flight up until that point following their promotion the previous season – few would have anticipated that Leeds would book their place in the next round with a 3-0 win, especially when Luke Varney missed an open goal from a couple of yards when the game was goalless.

But United would take the lead through Michael Tonge as the midfielder managed to thread the ball from the edge of the box through a crowded area and into the net.

A blistering run from Rodolph Austin led to Leeds’ second as his shot was parried into the path of El Hadji Diouf. The forward managed to do what Varney could not earlier in the game and tucked the ball home from close range.

With Leeds on the verge of claiming their second Premier League scalp of the season – having beaten Everton in the previous round – the rout was completed when Luciano Becchio scored from the penalty spot.

And having now been drawn against Liverpool in this year’s last eight, Garry Monk will be hoping that his side can take inspiration from that team’s run and spring an even bigger surprise when they face the Reds for a place in the semi-final.
