Some Arsenal fans are predicting big things for Gabriel Martinelli tonight.
The Gunners continue their EFL Cup campaign with a visit of AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the competition.
Mikel Arteta, whose side won 6-0 away to West Brom in the previous round, is likely to field a number of fringe and younger players due to the disparity in both teams’ league status, with tonight’s visitors being a League One outfit from the third tier of English football.
And one man likely to start in attack is Martinelli, a £6 million signing by Arsenal in the summer of 2019.
The 20-year-old forward lit up Arteta’s training session at Colney on Tuesday, beating one teammate before drilling one into the bottom corner with his left foot.
And here’s how some Arsenal fans are reacting to the footage on Twitter:
This is a big season for the Brazilian and realistically he’d love the chance to star in the Premier League a lot more regularly.
So far this year, Martinelli has only managed 13 top-flight outings under Arteta and a big showing this evening wouldn’t do his chances of playing more any harm at all, it has to be said.
On form, Martinelli is one of the most exciting young players in Europe, but it’s been a while since he really did much to enhance his reputation on the field and therefore you can’t rule out a dazzling performance today.
