Some Newcastle United fans have reacted with intrigue after Paulo Fonseca cancelled a speaking event last night in Portugal.

Fonseca to Newcastle?

Fonseca was due to speak in his homeland last night but pulled out of the occasion at the last minute, amid speculation that Newcastle are closing in on making their managerial appointment.

The Times have suggested that Newcastle want to announce Steve Bruce’s replacement before this weekend.

And many Newcastle fans think that Fonseca’s actions yesterday could well hint that he could be on his way to St. James’ Park.

Competition mounting

Fonseca has now been strongly linked with three Premier League jobs.

The Portuguese boss was liked by Tottenham Hotspur, but they went for Antonio Conte, which is leaving a battle between Newcastle and Aston Villa emerging.

The Daily Mail reported last night that Villa were considering replacing Dean Smith with Fonseca.

Newcastle, meanwhile, interviewed the 48-year-old weeks ago – but are yet to make their final decision.

The Magpies do desperately need to make an appointment though, as they are starting to get cut adrift.

Newcastle have taken just one point from their two games since Bruce’s departure, and that has left them sat well inside the relegation zone as things stand.
