Martin Keown believes Bruno Guimaraes was ‘on another level’ as Newcastle United faced Brentford. The Brazilian scored twice during an all-action display to help the Toon win 5-1.

The Magpies secured their third win of the Premier League season on Saturday after goals from Guimaraes and Jacob Murphy. Ivan Toney reduced the Bees’ deficit nine minutes into the second period from the penalty spot. But Guimaraes responded to complete his brace.

Guimaraes put Newcastle ahead against Brentford on 21 minutes with his first of the term. The 24-year-old intelligently diverted his header beyond David Raya from Kieran Trippier’s delivery. Murphy then doubled the Toon’s advantage with an easy finish from close range.

Toney’s spot-kick restored the Bees’ hope for taking a point from their trip to Tyneside on Saturday. But Guimaraes dashed Brentford’s aspirations as quickly as they returned with a stellar solo hit, drilling into the bottom left from the edge of the box after driving forward.

Miguel Almiron would wrap up the points eight minutes from time as the Paraguayan hit a fourth goal for the term. The 28-year-old followed up a brace to help beat Fulham 4-1 last time out after poaching on possession from Ethan Pinnock’s poor back pass and slotting in.

Pinnock would add to Brentford’s pain once again in the 90th minute when the centre-half scored an own goal. The Jamaica defender invertedly turned the ball home past Raya as he tried to intercept Joelinton’s cross to Chris Wood to further tarnish his return from injury.

Martin Keown felt Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes was ‘on another level’ v Brentford

Guimaraes showed his all-round ability by picking up the ball and charging at the Brentford backline after scoring a smart header for two of Newcastle’s goals in Saturday’s match. The eight-cap technician now boasts seven goals from 24 games for United in all competitions.

His double delight to beat the Bees enthralled Keown whilst he was speaking on the BBC’s Final Score. The Arsenal legend was effusive in his praise for Eddie Howe’s £35m, rising up to £41.5m with add-ons, January arrival from Lyon having given so much toward the result.

“We talk about top signings and Bruno is on another level,” Keown enthused. “He really is a top midfield player. He breaks from midfield and just tucks it into the corner. He gives everything to the team and those fans absolutely love him. Wonderful strike.”
