The latest young Southampton starlet, Olufela Olomola, has enjoyed an excellent start to life with Yeovil Town in League Two.
Few teams in English football blood highly rated youngsters into the first-team with quite as much regularity, or success, as Southampton.
And the early signs are certainly good for Olufela Olomola. The 19-year-old striker has a long way to go before he can follow in the footsteps of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and co but he is taking his chance on loan at League Two Yeovil Town in style.
Olomola has four goals in six games for The Glovers, spearheading victories against Accrington Stanley and Coventry City to ensure Yeovil have recovered somewhat from their chastening 8-2 opening day defeat to Luton Town.
“I’ve worked really hard from when I was a youngster to get an opportunity like this and right now I just want to take it with both hands,” Olomola told Somerset Live last month after his Man of the Match display against Accrington.
“Right now I’m buzzing.”
And so he should be. Olomola, who made his senior Southampton debut against Sunderland in the EFL Cup in October last year, is already a big hit at Huish Park and appears to be thriving after being given the chance to prove his worth in senior football.
The London-born youngster, who started out at Arsenal before moving to the South Coast in 2014, has captained Southampton’s Under-18 side but the sanitised and safe world of academy football pales in comparison to the real-life experience picked up in the lower leagues.
Olomola will be hoping that an impressive full season at Yeovil will catch the eye of Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino. The Saints could do with a goalscorer and Olomola will be hoping to answer their call one day soon.
