Speaking to the Daily Mail, Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has joked he would have to be Superman to score twice a week, as he did against Sunderland.

The French striker enjoyed a fine afternoon at the Stadium of Light as he came off the bench to bag a brace in the 4-1 victory over the Black Cats.

Those were his first goals of the season after he had missed the beginning of the season with an injury and then being dropped in favour of Alexis Sanchez.

It was a clear demonstration from him that he intends to fight for his place but has warned the Arsenal faithful to not expect two goals from him every game.

“If I could do that every single game I would be Superman,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I had a great assist from my team-mates so I had to finish the job. This is big for me, coming back from a tough injury, so I’m happy to be back.”

The result saw Arsenal maintain their fine start to the season as they challenge at the top of the table.

They have now picked up 23 points from their first 10 games and look destined to be challenging for the title once again.

After their title capitulation in the second half of last season, they will be determined not to get ahead of themselves this time around, though, and Giroud has insisted there is still a long way to go.

“We have played a quarter of the league, a little more, but it’s still the beginning,” he added.

“I’m not the man to speak too much but we enjoy this position. We want to win it but there is a long time to go, even though we are in a good moment.”
