Olivier Giroud comments on scoring against Tottenham Hotspur

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are fierce North London rivals.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has admitted to the club’s official website that he did not realise how big the North London rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur was until he scored against them.

Giroud joined Arsenal from French club Montpellier in the summer of 2012 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million.

The France international striker has since established himself as one of the main players for the Gunners and has scored 100 goals in all competitions for Arsene Wenger’s side.

The 31-year-old has scored some wonderful goals for Arsenal over the years, and among them is one against bitter North London rivals Tottenham.

The former Tours striker told Arsenal’s official website: “In my first north London derby maybe, or one of the first at the Emirates, Theo was on the right side.

“He put in an early cross and I tried to put it in the net, but it was very quick and I have more confidence in my left foot so I took on the outside.

“It was a great feeling because I couldn’t imagine how big it was for the fans and obviously for us in the dressing room. It was one of my best moments definitely.”

Arsenal and Tottenham are fierce and bitter rivals, and one suspects that Giroud is now fully aware of how big the rivalry is between the two North London teams is.

Spurs finished above Arsenal in the Premier League table last season, and one should not be surprised if they end up doing so again this term.
