Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has been backed to win the Golden Boot by Paul Merson.
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud can outscore his Premier League rivals this season, believes Paul Merson.
The former Gunner is now a pundit for SkySports, and has tipped the Frenchman to set new personal records, via his prediction column.
His alternate tip was Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic who missed most of last season through injury.
He said: “If Stevan Jovetic gets a game and plays every week then I think he could be the top scorer because I think he’s a really good player – especially now Alvaro Negredo is out injured.
“If he doesn’t play then I have to say Olivier Giroud because Arsenal should make a million chances every week with the players they’ve got in the team.”
| Team | Goals | Apps | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luis Suarez | Liverpool | 31 | 33 |
| Daniel Sturridge | Liverpool | 21 | 29 |
| Yaya Touré | Man City | 20 | 35 |
| Sergio Agüero | Man City | 17 | 23 |
| Wayne Rooney | Man Utd | 17 | 29 |
| Wilfried Bony | Swansea | 16 | 34 |
| Edin Dzeko | Man City | 16 | 31 |
| Olivier Giroud | Arsenal | 16 | 36 |
| Romelu Lukaku | Everton | 15 | 33 |
| Jay Rodriguez | Southampton | 15 | 33 |
Giroud finished in the Premier League’s top 10 scorers last season, but was unable to pass the 20 goal mark.
With Alexis Sanchez in the side, and ideally a fully fit Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil all season, it is hard to see his tally decreasing.
The main threat would be if Arsene Wenger elects to play Alexis Sanchez up front in his place, as the Frenchman admitted was a consideration last weekend, with his pace offering the Gunners a different option up front.
Reach new heights, or lose his first team place altogether – that’s the two contrasting options facing Giroud this season, but Merson has made clear which way he sees it going.
