Liverpool continue to be linked with RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.
RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has told Sky Sports in Germany that there’s a chance Timo Werner would rather join Liverpool over Bayern Munich.
Leipzig have been developing rapidly in recent years, and have done a pretty good job of keeping their squad together, save for losing Naby Keita to Liverpool last year.
This season, Leipzig sit third in the Bundesliga table, with a Champions League return on the cards, but they have concerns about the future of striker Werner.
The 23-year-old has been a star for Leipzig since joining from Stuttgart in 2016, hitting 61 goals in 112 games, whilst he’s impressed this term with 19 goals and 11 assists.
Known for his pace and movement off the last defender, Werner is an exciting striker, who looks set to leave Leipzig this summer having refused to sign a new deal.
His existing contract ends in 2020, meaning Leipzig may have to sell while they still can. The Liverpool Echo recently noted Liverpool’s interest, with Klopp needing another striker and no doubt familiar with Werner from Germany.
Now, Leipzig chief Mintzlaff has admitted that he’s still hoping for a U-turn from Werner, but played down that he’s Bayern Munich-bound, opening the door to the striker instead joining Liverpool – or even Borussia Dortmund or Paris Saint-Germain instead.
“The situation is still the same. Timo Werner would rather not sign an extension,” said Mintzlaff. “But that could change. I don’t think it’s completely out of the question that he could extend his deal. We haven’t talked to Bayern Munich about Timo Werner yet.”
“Maybe he doesn’t even want to go to Munich. Maybe he would rather join Tuchel in Paris, Klopp at Liverpool or Favre at Dortmund,” he added.
