Swansea City striker Oliver McBurnie has told the Daily Record that he hopes ‘legend’ Steven Gerrard will be a success for Rangers – no matter whether he signs the striker.

Rangers are set for a busy summer having appointed Liverpool icon Gerrard as their new manager, with the ex-England international proving to be the eventual replacement for Pedro Caixinha.

The Gers have already tied up deals to bring in Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield on free transfers this summer, but Gerrard will surely be given huge funds to spend on his squad after a disappointing campaign.

Gerrard’s arrival will make Rangers even more appealing in the transfer market, and he has recently been linked with a huge swoop for Swansea City striker Oliver McBurnie.

McBurnie, 21, may have been born in Leeds and started his career with Bradford City, but he is a Scotland international striker who grew up supporting Rangers and has proven himself to be mad about the Gers on social media.

The centre forward hasn’t been a regular for Swansea but spent the second half of this past season on loan at Barnsley, where he impressed with nine goals in 17 appearances for the Tykes.

Recent reports from The Sun claimed that Rangers boss Gerrard is desperate to land McBurnie and hand him a dream move to Ibrox, with a bid of around £4million submitted to the relegated Swans.

Now, McBurnie has told the Daily Record that he thinks Gerrard is a ‘legend’ and, as a Rangers fan, hopes he performs ‘fantastically’ at Ibrox, whether he signs McBurnie himself or not – and he didn’t rule out leaving Swansea for the Gers if a deal was on the table.

“He is a legend in the game with what he has done for Liverpool and he has had a great career,” said McBurnie. “As a Rangers fan I hope he goes there and he turns it around and does fantastically well. Whether that has anything to do with me or not, who knows? But as a Rangers fan I would love to see him go there and do unbelievably well. Me and my brother grew up as massive Rangers fans. I don’t think we had any choice. But I am still contracted to Swansea, I have another year left and I need to get back and see what is happening.”

“I will speak to Swansea when I come back from this trip, see what they want to do and what we want to do and take it from there. It is a bit up in the air at the minute. I don’t think the club can let people go or bring people in without a manager being there. It is a waiting game, there is no rush. It is the uncertainty of football. It is exciting in a way but also its nervy. I could end up at Swansea, I could end up anywhere in the world but it is exciting,” he added.
