RB Leipzig and Scotland winger Oliver Burke has confirmed he had been in contact with Tottenham Hotspur about a move to the club this summer – before heading to the Bundesliga.

Nottingham Forest fans were up in arms when the club sold their star player to the German side, for a fee reported by the Daily Mail to be in the region of £13 million.

The flying winger was linked with plenty of Premier League teams – including Spurs.

Speaking to the Daily Mail this week ahead of international duty with Scotland the he admitted he nearly went to visit Spurs ahead of a potential move – but decided the Premier League was not for him:

“I was going to visit Tottenham. But I said no because Leipzig showed enough care and attention to the little details. For a young man I don’t want to go somewhere that is a big club but, really, am I going to play? Am I going to progress? Or are they just going to stick me out on loan, which happens a lot at English clubs nowadays.

“You can only look at your Chelseas, and see the amount of talent they have, but they’re all on loan, not getting used. You don’t feel wanted when you sign for a club, you’re there for two training sessions, and then they buy someone else in your position for double the amount.”

Burke’s decision to head to Germany looks to have been a good one. He has performed well in his early appearances for Leipzig and the Scot is getting plenty of playing time.

Spurs, of the big clubs in the Premier League, might have been the best bet for Burke. Tottenham give plenty of chances to their young players and he would have thrived under Mauricio Pochettino.

But German football gets to enjoy him and Spurs will just have to be envious for the time being.
