Rangers drew 2-2 away at Villarreal on Thursday night.
Rangers kicked off their Europa League campaign with a superb result on Thursday night, drawing 2-2 at Villarreal whilst coming from behind twice.
The Gers were finally able to start their group stage campaign on Thursday night, having seen off Shkupi, Osijek, Maribor and Ufa over the qualifying phase this summer.
A difficult trip to Villarreal was first up for Steven Gerrard on Thursday, as the Spaniards finished fifth in La Liga last season, and didn’t take long to show their quality.
Carlos Bacca fired Villarreal into the lead after just 45 seconds at El Madrigal, with Rangers failing to muster a single shot on target in the first half.
However, a driving run from James Tavernier allowed Daniel Candeias to cross for Scott Arfield to equalise for the Gers, only for Gerard Moreno to instantly put Villarreal back in front.
Rangers did claim their draw though, as Kyle Lafferty tucked home Borna Barisic’s cross, and whilst they rode their luck at times, Rangers will be delighted to have claimed a point.
Fans were certainly delighted, and one of their more famous fans – Swansea City and Scotland international striker Oli McBurnie – took to Twitter to send messages to two players.
McBurnie called striker Lafferty ‘a legend’ after his goal, before praising winger Glenn Middleton for a ‘fantastic’ cameo performance in Spain as Rangers claimed a surprise point.
