Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter to react after Bournemouth announced the signing of Ørjan Nyland on a free transfer.

What’s the story?

Well, the 30-year-old was a free agent after his contract with the Villans ran out at the end of last season.

Nyland has joined Scott Parker’s side on a one-year contract.

The 28-cap Norway international – who Aston Villa paid £1m for – made 36 appearances in total for the Villans.

In those outings, Nyland kept nine clean sheets and conceded 53 goals, which isn’t the best record in all honesty.

You can see why Dean Smith decided not to keep the shot-stopper, with Emiliano Martinez and Jed Steer already at the club.

Most ironic transfer in history?

As one fan below put it, you couldn’t write this transfer.

Why? Well, it was Nyland who carried the ball over the line in a crucial relegation six-pointer which affected Bournemouth in the 2019/20 campaign.

However, goal-line technology failed to pick up on his error, and the game ended 0-0 at Villa Park.

Eventually, Aston Villa survived relegation by one point, at the expense of Bournemouth – the goal-line technology issue effectively relegated the Cherries.

So, the fact that Nyland is now helping Bournemouth achieve promotion back to the Premier League is full of irony.

Let’s see what the Aston Villa fans on Twitter have been saying about the Championship club’s announcement
