Paul Merson has stated ‘seriously what difference does it make’ in Harry Kane going to the Masters, days before Tottenham’s home defeat to Brighton, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (18/04/22 at 5:05 pm).
The Tottenham striker has been questioned for flying out to Augusta for watching the final round of the Masters last week.
It didn’t help his cause when Spurs suffered a 1-0 defeat to Brighton, with Kane producing his quietest performance for a number of months.
Many questioned Kane’s call to fly out to the United States, with some thinking it played a part in that timid display.
But Merson was having none of it and thinks it didn’t matter one bit, as ex-Crystal Palace striker, Clinton Morrison, backed up his comments.
“Oh, seriously, what difference does that make,” said Merson. “Of course, it doesn’t make a difference. I don’t think so.”
Clinton Morrison added: “Everyone is making it a story because they didn’t win the game. If he scores a few goals, then no-one is talking about Harry Kane going to the golf.”
Merson then joked: “At the end of the day, he had a double-bogey.”
Kane returned days before Tottenham could welcome Brighton to north London, so tiredness or jet lag, or any of that rubbish can’t be brought into it.
Plus, the England captain wasn’t the only one on the field of play and what explanation do the others have for their abject display?
All of them weren’t with Kane at Augusta, were they? So, it was a simple case of Antonio Conte’s side being poor on the day and being beaten by the better side.
And, in truth, they have to forget about it all as quickly as possible because no-one seemingly wants to take charge of this race for Champions League football.
