Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left disappointed after Steven Bergwijn was called into the Dutch national side.

National team selection

Bergwijn has been an unused substitute in both matches which Antonio Conte has taken charge of at Spurs so far.

The Tottenham winger does not appear to be part of Conte’s starting plans right now.

But Holland have still kept him in their thoughts and gave him a call-up yesterday, after Steven Berghuis had to pull out with injury.

The problem for Bergwijn is that others can now get ahead of him in Spurs training.

While he plays for his country, other Tottenham attackers are set to be put through their paces at Hotspur Way by Conte.

And Spurs fans are disappointed that Bergwijn will not get his chance to impress their new manager over the coming fortnight.

Training time needed

Interestingly Bergwijn was firmly part of Nuno’s plans at the start of the season.

The rapid winger featured prominently over the early part of the campaign, but an ankle injury disrupted his progress.

Since that moment Bergwijn has not been able to break back into Tottenham’s team, and he is still looking for his first goal of the new term.

In Conte’s system there does seem to be room for him.

He could start in one of the two slots behind the striker, or even as a right-wing back, if Conte decides to set up in a very attacking manner.

But while his latest call-up may be a honour, it could have come at a very bad time for Tottenham’s £27 million man (BBC Sport).
