Many Newcastle United fans have been left less than impressed by Eddie Howe’s comments after their heavy defeat to Leicester City.

A damaging defeat

Newcastle lost 4-0 at the King Power Stadium yesterday, in what was another damaging blow to their survival chances.

Howe wasn’t quite as negative as many Newcastle supporters after the game, though.

He felt that the scoreline didn’t necessarily reflect the way that the game had gone.

“The scoreline looks like a heavy defeat but I didn’t think it felt like that at all,” he said, at his post match press conference, as quoted by Sky Sports.

But Newcastle fans didn’t entirely agree with the analysis from their new manager.

They felt that Howe may have been putting a gloss on what was a poor display.

Is Howe correct?

In terms of the stats, Howe may actually have had a point.

Leicester only managed to muster up eight shots against Newcastle, but four of them found the back of the net.

Newcastle also had marginally more possession in the fixture, but they were not able to find a way through the Foxes’ back-line.

But Magpies fans’ frustrations are understandable.

Steve Bruce wound supporters up by coming up with too many excuses after defeats, and Howe must be careful not to fall into the same trap.

And regardless of performances, the pressure is continuing to build on Newcastle to start picking up wins.

Howe did lead the Magpies to their first three point haul of the season against Burnley two weekends’ ago, but they are still lodged in the relegation zone as things stand.
