Newcastle United are inching towards the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with the 24-year-old undergoing a medical.
According to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Olympique Lyonnais star is scheduled to undergo a physical in Ecuador ahead of his proposed transfer to the northeast Premier League club.
If all goes to plan, Guimaraes will become Newcastle’s third signing of the January transfer window following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, with a centre-back and left-back also likely to be signed.
With Guimaraes being chased by both Arsenal and Juventus for most of the window, the Premier League relegation candidates landing the Ligue 1 star could be one of the most surprising moves of the month.
Indeed, Newcastle have been targetting a certain profile of player so far this January which would compensate them should they drop into the Championship. However, Guimaraes is one ambitious signing from the club.
As we know, the Lyon midfielder has been one of the club’s best players over the past two seasons, with Guimaraes now a full Brazilian international and an Olympic gold medalist with the South American giants.
And now, according to Ornstein, a move to Newcastle is close for Guimaraes, with the midfielder taking his medical in the past 24 hours ahead of a move to St. James Park.

As you can expect, Newcastle fans are astonished that a deal for Guimaraes has been completed so quickly. With supporters gobsmacked that the midfielder could soon become a Magpie.
