Paul Merson lost it on Soccer Saturday via Football Daily when Jordan Henderson’s last-minute winner was ruled offside during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Everton.
In a game packed with controversy, the dying moments of the match saw Henderson seemingly secure a dramatic three points, only for Sadio Mane to be adjudged offside by inches – but many argued that he wasn’t even offside.
Despite such a chaotic finish, that perhaps wasn’t the most controversial moment of the match because Jordan Pickford was lucky not to see red for his high challenge, which injured Virgil van Dijk in the first half.
As the drama at Goodison was taking yet another twist, Merson couldn’t believe his eyes when Henderson’s goal was being ruled offside.
“No goal, oh no, oh no, no, no,” Merson told Sky Sports. “Stop killing the game. He’s offside? It’s his elbow. Oh my God.
“What’s offside there? What’s offside? I don’t know. His back is to the line, so his elbow is there. I don’t know.”
There was added heat and interest coming into this Merseyside derby because of Everton’s 100% start and the fact that the champions had conceded seven in their previous game.
Whilst the supporters weren’t present in the stands, the game typified a hotly-contested derby encounter, with tackles flying in, end-to-end action, intricate play, a red card and controversy.
And whilst both teams displayed some entertaining football, there’s only one thing that will grab the headlines – and that’s Van Dijk’s injury.
