Paul Merson was left stunned and fuming on Soccer Saturday (19/09/20 at 3:35 pm) after Fulham were awarded a controversial penalty during their defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road.

The outspoken pundit labelled Stuart Attwell’s decision not to overturn the on-field call as ‘unbelievable’, as he also stated ‘Oh my god, what am I watching?’ when he realised that the penalty was going to stand.

Joe Bryan was involved in the incident when he was running towards the penalty area at speed, with Robin Koch mis-timing his tackle, sliding in, trying to pull back his tackling leg at the same time before it all resulted in the Fulham left-back tumbling to the floor.

Merson made his feelings pretty clear and stated that the defender dived and should have been sent off, as Leeds fans will love Merson’s forthright views on the situation.

“Oh, no, it’s not a penalty [after seeing it at first glance],” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “They will go to VAR. Bryan goes through and he dives a week before Koch comes across.

“Unbelievable. No!!! He [Bryan] should be sent off. What’s the geezer saying? What?! It’s a reverse ball to Bryan, he goes into the box and Koch is coming across and Bryan is having a look and he goes over [dives].

“I cannot believe it’s a penalty. He’s going to give it! Oh, he has given it! He’s given a penalty – Oh my god. What am I watching? If it’s not a [penalty] I am definitely having these glasses changed because I didn’t think it was a penalty. Never a penalty.”

That penalty call didn’t matter too much because Leeds ended up winning 4-3 in what was yet another thrilling encounter involving the Yorkshire side.

Helder Costa netted a brace during the match, with Klich and Bamford also getting on the scoresheet for the second Premier League game running – the Whites converted their own spot-kick during the match when Bryan pushed Bamford in the penalty area.

After scoring three goals at the Premier League champions last time out, Leeds will now be sending fear down the spines of their opponents because not many teams will want to lock horns with the attack-minded side – but that defence will be a worry.
