Danny Murphy has told Soccer AM (10/10/20 at 11:15 am) that he would have ‘loved’ to have played in an Old Firm game between Celtic and Rangers.

The former Liverpool player also raved about the Celtic supporters and shared the ‘unbelievable’ atmosphere he witnessed at Parkhead during his playing days.

Whether it’s Celtic or Rangers, both are known for their hostile atmospheres and for perhaps being a part of the biggest and fiercest derby in Britain.

Nonetheless, going back to Murphy’s playing days, he recalls one UEFA Cup game at Parkhead for Liverpool which resulted in him just thinking ‘Oh my God’ to the noise from the home crowd.

“I would have loved to have played in that game [Old Firm],” Murphy told Soccer AM. “I played at Celtic Park, a UEFA Cup game for Liverpool, and I have to say I have played in some big games and in some atmospheres but it was up there.

“It was 2-2, that particular game, but they went through – we worked on all week they had Hartson, and I think, Sutton it was. The long balls and knockdowns. Let’s stay in the game because they are going to come at you.

“60 seconds in. Long ball. Knockdown. Goal and 1-0 down. The noise from the Celtic fans. Oh my God. It was unbelievable. And it was an unbelievable experience.”

With club football currently in hibernation because of international football, it is set to return with a bang next week.

Scotland are one game away from reaching the European Championships next summer after their nervy penalty shootout win against Israel.

But those in Glasgow cheering their nation on Thursday will firmly be at one another when Celtic host Rangers at Parkhead next Saturday.

It’s a crying shame that supporters won’t be allowed into stadiums because this is a fixture where those fans will be hugely missed.
