Well, Tottenham Hotspur were brought back down to Earth by Chelsea on Wednesday night.
Spurs were beaten 2-0 by the European champions away at Stamford Bridge last night.
It was the first leg of a Carabao Cup semi-final, meaning that Antonio Conte’s Tottenham charges still have a chance of reaching the showpiece at Wembley for the second year in succession.
However, the North Londoners will simply have to perform to a significantly higher standard in the return leg.
Honestly, very few of the Italian manager’s players produced an acceptable performance against Chelsea.
One of those was certainly Oliver Skipp who, despite being only 21, really held his own against the continent’s finest football team.
However, the Tottenham trainer substituted him for Harry Winks with 18 minutes left in a decision which has some Lilywhites supporters on Twitter utterly perplexed – and rightly so.
In midfield, Skipp was far more influential for the visitors than partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who, despite his experience and seniority, struggled in a massive way versus Thomas Tuchel’s outfit.
Here’s how Tottenham supporters on Twitter reacted to seeing the Hotspur Way graduate get substituted:
Gulf in class
Honestly, that’s probably the best way to describe the contest.
Chelsea were just far better than Tottenham on Wednesday and even the Italian himself acknowledged that in his post-match media responsibilities.
However, a two-goal advantage is a dangerous one.
An early goal for the Lilywhites in the return fixture across London and genuinely, the overall result could be wildly different for Tottenham.
