Peter Schmeichel disagreed with Jamie Carragher’s claim that Alexis Sanchez possibly deserved a red card for his first-half tackle on Thiago during Liverpool’s 1-0 second-leg defeat against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Liverpool progressed through to the next round of the Champions League, after beating Inter over two legs, with Sanchez receiving two bookings at Anfield last night.

The first one came on the stroke of half-time for a high challenge on Thiago, whereby his studs caught the Liverpool midfielder on the legs.

Then, minutes after Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring at Anfield, his side were down to ten men, this time Sanchez getting booked for a questionable foul on Fabinho.

Whilst many questioned whether that second challenge deserved a booking, everyone was in agreement that Sanchez’s first foul was yellow card worthy.

But when Carragher possibly questioned it deserving more, or both of them put together being red card worthy, Schmeichel wasn’t having any of it, whilst speaking to CBS Sports (08/03/22 at 10:05 pm).

“Alexis doesn’t actually win the ball with his studs (on his tackle on Fabinho), he wins it with his foot,” said Carragher. “His foot has to go somewhere. It’s not even that high.

“It’s probably just a foul. Just, maybe. Even that might be debatable – it’s nowhere near a yellow card. But you could argue that the two fouls put together is a red card.”

Schmeichel added: “How can you argue that? Oh, come on! At very, very best a little pink. You can’t get sent off for that (his challenge on Thiago), then the game has gone.”

Carragher responded: “You could argue that’s more than a yellow. I wouldn’t want to see him sent off for that. But some could have sent him off for that.”

Sanchez was probably paying tribute to his former club Arsenal by getting sent off on English soil.

Ever since Mikel Arteta’s appointment in north London, no club in the Premier League has seen more sending-offs than the Gunners.

Added with, during Arsenal’s two-legged defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup, both Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey saw red.

So, once you have Arsenal blood, you will always have Arsenal blood, but aside from that, Liverpool will be pleased that they did the job, even if they feel their performance levels weren’t at their highest.
