Speaking on the Redmen TV, Neil Jones has been discussing Liverpool’s recruitment structure after it was announced that Julian Ward will be leaving the club.
Ward only took over from Michael Edwards in the summer, but he’s already had enough of this role and is set to leave at the end of the season.
So, where do Liverpool go next? Well, The Times report that a rethink of the sporting structure is on the cards, while The Guardian say that the Sporting Director role could be scrapped entirely.
According to Jones, people within the club have been saying that the entire situation is up in the air and that everything is currently on the table.
Anything can happen
Jones shared what he’s heard about the Sporting Director role at Anfield.
“There isn’t an assistant Sporting Director at the club right now, but even the off the record steers you’ve had from people around the club say that it’s all up in the air right now and everything is on the table,” Jones said.
“I don’t know what other models there are. Not many clubs don’t have that clear structure with a Sporting Director. I don’t know what a different model looks like. Are we going to a manager-led policy? I think that’s the most obvious conclusion to draw, and that’s interesting. Jurgen knows a player and he has sway, but it’s interesting that it’s a lot of responsibility for someone who has a lot of his shoulders.”
Figure it out
No matter which direction Liverpool are going to go in, they need to figure this out soon.
This is a club that has, for so long, prided itself on its long-term planning and vision, but now, it seems as though all of that has gone out of the window.
Of course, this could be linked to the fact that FSG are reportedly looking to sell the club, but with January just around the corner, Liverpool need to get a handle on how they’re going to approach recruitment going forwards.
