England boss Gareth Southgate has insisted to ITV Sport, during their live coverage, that Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish can play alongside Mason Mount.

Grealish and Mount have always been thought to be in competition for a place in England’s team.

However, Southgate named the pair both in his starting line-up last night, and it worked to good affect.

Grealish and Mount helped England to a 3-0 victory, and Southgate said after the game that the Villa and Chelsea players are definitely capable of playing alongside each other again.

“Of course. There are a lot of other players in the squad as well. We have a lot of competition for places,” Southgate said.

“You saw them in two different roles today, they can both play a lot of different roles.”

If Southgate is working on a system which can incorporate both Grealish and Mount then that can only be positive news for the Villa man.

Southgate has tended to favour Mount so far, despite Grealish’s impressive form this season.

The Villa playmaker may just have edged his way closer to receiving a regular starting berth for the Three Lions last night, though.

Grealish was excellent again as England cruised to success at Wembley, and he simply cannot keep being overlooked if he keeps up his current form.
