The midfielder has been heavily linked with Leeds United and Middlesbrough, but the bookies think Sunderland are in with a shout of signing him.

Popular bookmakers BETVICTOR have cut the odds on the Black Cats signing Canaries midfielder Jonny Howson, making them fourth favourites in the race to obtain the 29-year-old’s signature.

Newly appointed Sunderland manager Simon Grayson managed Howson at Leeds United, so he will know all about what the Whites academy graduate has to offer.

The Norwich star enjoyed an incredibly successful season at Carrow Road last term, from an individual aspect at least, scoring six goals and chipping in with seven assists in 38 Championship outings, whilst being predominantly deployed in a deep-lying midfield position.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a plethora of clubs already during this transfer window, including the likes of Middlesbrough and Leeds, according to the Mirror.

BETVICTOR believe that Sunderland could have a chance of signing him, however, and list them as 6/1 in the race.

Howson is exactly the type of player who Grayson needs, as he looks to instil some passion and tenacity into his midfield, ahead of what will be a physically demanding Championship campaign.

With so many clubs in the race to sign him though, the Wearside outfit will have their work cut out, if they want to bring him to the Stadium of Light, although Grayson’s relationship with the midfielder could sway the scales in their favour.
