The Manchester United centre-back would be a superb summer signing for Everton.

Popular bookmakers SkyBET have slashed the odds on United defender Chris Smalling joining the Toffees this summer, making them the new favourites in the race to sign him.

Ronald Koeman is thought to be keen on adding a proven centre-back to his Everton squad this summer, and the 27-year-old England international fits the bill perfectly.

He was criticised on numerous occasions by Jose Mourinho throughout the course of this summer, for what the Portuguese perceived to be a lack of commitment to the cause.

And with just personal terms and a medical standing in the Way of Victor Lindelof’s big money move to Old Trafford (Sky Sports), Smalling’s days in Manchester could be numbered.

Quite where he will be plying his trade next term is yet to be decided, but SkyBET believe a move to Goodison Park is on the cards. They list the Blues as 2/1 favourites to sign Smalling, ahead of Arsenal at 6/1.

The former Fulham man is wonderfully versatile, and is equally accomplished when deployed in both the centre-back and right-back positions – something that will undoubtedly appeal to Koeman, especially with Seamus Coleman ruled out with a long-term injury.

The 6ft 4in defender still has two years remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, so he will not come cheap, but Everton should do everything within their power to sign him this summer.
