Defoe has scored 14 of Sunderland’s 24 Premier League goals this season, but could be off if the Mackems go down. Are Newcastle United and Aston Villa potential destinations?
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
Bookmakers Bet Victor have offered odds on Newcastle United and Aston Villa signing Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe this summer.
Defoe has scored 14 of Sunderland’s 24 Premier League goals this season, and is widely expected to leave the Stadium of Light if the Mackems go down.
West Ham United have been strongly linked with a move for their former player, however, the Hammers are unlikely to be alone in their pursuit the 34-year-old.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, West Ham are listed 5/2 favourites to sign Defoe during the summer transfer window – though with odds of 8/1, Newcastle and Aston Villa perhaps cannot be ruled out.
A move to Newcastle would be especially controversial, given the Magpies’ fierce rivalry with Sunderland, however, unlike Villa, Rafa Benitez’s side are at least likely to be a Premier League outfit come August.
Another Championship promotion hopeful, Brighton & Hove Albion are listed as surprise second favourites with odds of 4/1, slightly ahead of Crystal Palace (6/1).
